espadrilles / heels / vest / dress / clutch / tank / flares / top

Sale season is a great time to supplement your closet and try out trends withOUT the big price tag.  I bought this Carven dress myself to wear to some weddings this summer!  These are all from Nordstrom's half-yearly sale (which ends tomorrow); this isn't a sponsored post--I'm just an avid sale shopper and like to share the wealth.  Snatch them up before they're gone!

Simple Gold Choker (See Jane Wear)

classic white equipment short sleeve blouse with ripped black jeans
Equipment short-sleeve blouse, J Brand distressed jeans, Zara sandals (old but similar),
J Crew shaped choker (on sale!)Saint Laurent sunglasses,
Chanel bag
I am not a jewelry person. I repeat, I am not a jewelry person.  However, I was recently drawn to a choker of all things and you know what?  I'm into it.  It's like made of hemp, which was the last type of choker I wore, maybe back in 8th grade.  Nope, it's a shiny, gold-plated choker.  Once I get used to wearing it, maybe I'll spring for the puka shell version.

Urban Safari (See Jane Wear)

brixton joanna hat, joie lace tee, white flare jeans
Brixton hat, Joie lace top (old but similar and here), Paige 'Fiona' flares, Mansur Gavriel bag,
Saint Laurent sunglasses, J Crew sandals (on sale)
This oversized panama hat is perfect for all jungle tours in Chicago.  No, but really, hats are tough for me (I have a deceivingly big head), but I couldn't resist this one.  It's great for walking around the city and keeping wrinkles at bay.  This is what I think about now that I'm 30.

Like Old Times (See Jane Wear)

pencil jean skirt, chanel boy bag
Topshop sweatshirt, Zara denim pencil skirt (old but similar), Chanel 'boy' bag,
Ray Ban mirrored aviators (on sale!), Manolo Blahnik BB heels
I remember when I scored this denim skirt.  I wore it the day I found out I was pregnant.  Then it stopped fitting.  It barely fit last summer after I had Harry.  On a Sunday while cleaning my closet, I found it, tried it on, and lo and behold it fit!  Shoot..maybe that means I'm pregnant again. The Art of Re-wearing (See Jane Wear)

rag bone ripped knee jeans with aztec jacket
ASOS aztec jacket (old but similar), rag & bone ripped knee jeans (old but similar), J Crew silk cami,
ShoeMint 'Miller' mules (similar)
, ChloĆ© bucket bag (similar)
Two items in this outfit are two years old (wore the jacket here and the jeans here).  One item in this outfit is six years old (proof that bucket bags never go out of style).  Maybe you've noticed that blogs these days have become very shopping oriented; they're largely about consuming and showcasing new clothes rather than thriving on creativity and the thought that you can truly build out a wardrobe on essential pieces. I get it--fashion is frivolous and I'm not giving this shift in blogging the side-eye, because I too, am a major consumer.  There's a huge thrill for me when buying something new but I also get that same rush from pulling an old pair of jeans from my closet that I bought years ago and know that the cost per wear is essentially nil.

Maybe it's the 30 year old in me.  Maybe it's my good ol' midwest roots.  But, sometimes I like re-wearing things and I really love telling someone who asks where I got something, "oh, I got it at (insert place) a few years ago."  It makes me feel pathetically a little proud.  And it also helps me further ignore the really expensive thing(s) in my closet that I've worn once.

Power Suit (See Jane Wear)

culottes jumpsuit, iro blazer
1.State jumpsuit (c/o), IRO blazer (also here), J Crew heels, Chanel 'boy' bag, Saint Laurent sunglasses
A culotte jumpsuit and a blazer?  It's the new power suit!  But really, I feel pretty professional and although my work dress errs on the casual side, I like to embrace my finance roots and dress powerfully.  I'm basically Melanie Griffith in 'Working Girl."
