Busy (See Jane Wear)

Zara coat (sold out but similar), H&M dress (old but similar), H&M scarf, Vince Camuto boots (similar)
This look is a tad busy (stripes! plaid! army green!), but desperate times call for desperate measures.  I'm running out of patience with this winter we're having.  I hope I can sustain some inspiration for the rest of this winter; it's going to be tough.

Winter Slump (See Jane Inspired)

1 - texture, texture, texture. keep it interesting with different fabrics during the winter.
2 - black + (insert favorite bright color here) =
3 - make fur casual with sneakers, glasses and messy hair.
4 - off-duty models change up their coats to make similar black, skinny pants look different.

It's about that time of year again.  That time when spring clothing starts to emerge onto the scene and you look at your winter clothes with pure and utter disdain.  Long gone are the days (i.e. end of August) when you couldn't wait watch the leaves turn colors and to begin piling on the layers for the chilly temperatures ahead; you know the time--when cold weather actually seems magical for those few fleeting moments.  No, these are the times that test your patience and if you live in a colder climate, you find yourself asking why you live where you do.

I am in dire need of winter dressing inspiration.  Above are just a couple things I find myself saying every.single.morning.  If I never see another coat again, I'll be fine....that is, until September rolls around again.

Blue Line (See Jane Wear)

Zara hat (similar), F21 stole (old but similar), J Crew double-breasted blazer, Gap tee, J Brand jeans,
Manolo Blahnik heels,
Saint Laurent sunglasses
, Celine bag
I've never realized until this moment how much black and blue I wear in the winter (here, here and here are prime examples).  Navy is my go-to color (perhaps my favorite?) and I love how it looks with black in the wintertime.  And honestly, jeans have been my uniform during this pregnancy (28 weeks/7 months here...whoa).  I find it hard to wear anything but pants; skirts and dresses are just too hard in this cold weather we've been having.  Is it spring yet?

Orange is the New Black (See Jane Want)

1. throw / 2. nail polish / 3. vest / 4. book 5. blouse / 6. skirt / 7. flats
earrings / 9. tote / 10. bralette / 11. sweatshirt
I love citrus season--even if it is during wintertime.  I tend to shy away from these brights during the colder months, but sometimes you need the uplifting capabilities of a vibrant orange.  Hope you all find something bright to refresh you this weekend!

Add Some Flare (See Jane Wear)

J Crew jacket, H&M top, J Brand jeans, Gap booties,
Michael Kors hat (Eric's but similar), Saint Laurent sunglasses
Coat season is running out so I'm trying to get in as many wears with my various coats as possible (and changing it up with various denim in my closet--like these old flares).  Oh, who am I kidding?! Here in the midwest, coat season is nine months out of the year, so they're getting plenty of wear.  They're also pretty good at hiding this bump of mine.  I can't believe I'm 27 weeks--nearly 7 months along!  It seems like just yesterday I let the cat out of the bag.

Bacon + Brussel Sprout Breakfast Hash (See Jane Make)

Brussel sprouts for breakfast?  I've been convinced with an easy breakfast hash that includes bacon, mushrooms and sweet potatoes.  You can easily mix this up with any vegetables, but I wanted to keep it savory.  Add some eggs and buttered toast and you have yourself a hearty and somewhat healthy (bacon, you win) breakfast.  I used this recipe with some variations; I added mushrooms and grated some smoked gouda on top at the end.

Pink + Purple (See Jane Re-wear)

Equipment sweater (c/o), ASOS coat (on sale!), H&M maternity pants, T&J design necklace,
Loren Hope necklace,
Saint Laurent sunglasses, Seychelles boots
This coat has been getting tons of wear.  When I first purchased it, I admittedly thought it would be a special occasion top coat (already worn here and here).  Well, in Chicago, you have to mix it up with your coats to keep it interesting--because you live in them for about eight months out of the year.  I love black and pink together and decided to go even more bold with a royal purple sweater.  Hell, I even wore a middle part in my hair for the first time in fifteen years!  Cold weather + pregnancy make you do crazy things.

Winter Pastels (See Jane Wear)

MBMJ coat (very old but similar here and here), Joie sweater, Zara jeans (similar),
Chanel bag, Seychelles boots (on sale!), TOMS sunglasses (c/o)
Nothing beats the winter blues with some winter pastels.  Muted grays and pinks are the perfect anecdote to my navy and black-heavy winter wardrobe.  Only three solid months of cold, winter weather to go...

Bold Stripes (See Jane Wear)

H&M dress (similar here and here) + tights, Manolo Blahnik heels, Celine bag

This dress has done double-duty for me this month.  I wore it on New Years Eve (sans turtleneck, of course) and again to work the next week--with a turtleneck, of course, because it's been downtown frigid.  It's not a maternity dress; I just bought a few sizes larger than my normal size.  It was the perfect answer to my normal (boring) uniform of oversized sweaters and pants.

What to Wear in the Bitter Cold (See Jane Freeze)

hat infinity scarf / coat / jeans shearling-lined boots
boot socks / lined gloves / turtleneck
Winter in Chicago is not for the faint of heart.  When the temperatures drop below zero and the wind chill is upwards of -50 degrees, it's hard to think of fashion when all you want is to keep warm.  You know it's truly cold when any exposed skin simply hurts when you go outside (hint: use a scarf to cover your face up to your eyeballs).  A few more of my tips of surviving this brutal winter weather:

1.) You can avoid puffer coats by taking advantage of the whole "oversized" coat trend.  Why?  You can fit more layers underneath that will keep you warm!
2.) Wear thick socks--even if wearing low booties.  (I know lots of people who forego socks with their UGG boots or if they're booties are low-cut.)  If it's truly cold and you're walking around outside, you will regret any exposed skin.  Frostbite really happens!
3.) Hats and gloves are crucial.  I know this sounds obvious but street style pictures often depict stylish people with unzipped coats, exposed ankles and no gloves; frostbite is never in fashion.

Stay warm!

Layers in Pregnancy (See Jane Wear)

Rebecca Taylor shearling vest (also on sale here), H&M coat, Joie sweater, ASOS maternity jeans,
Seychelles boots, ChloƩ bag (old but similar)
I thought being pregnant during the wintertime would be a breeze.  Chicago is absolutely frigid during the winter months so I thought to myself, "perfect. I'll stay indoors, nest, and wear baggy sweaters."  Turns out, the whole jeans/sweater combination gets old...and fast.  I can't wear my favorite winter dresses and skirts anymore and I constantly feel like I'm in a dressing rut (and I have a hard time justifying a bunch of new clothes that won't fit my post-baby body).  Lastly, I feel like my usual winter layers just make me look huge; and soon, I won't be able to zip up my coat.

Alright, enough whining from me; I just have a whole new appreciation for maternity dressing--it's not easy!  My promise to you (and myself) is that I will get a bit more creative as I continue to grow in size.

Fresh Snow, Fresh Start (See Jane Wear)

There's nothing like a fresh blanket of snow to welcome you into the new year.  It's almost symbolic in a way--the white powder creates a new, blank canvas for us.  Coincidentally, I'm entering into 2014 with an open mind; this year is my blank canvas, if you will.  I'm anticipating the arrival of our baby boy more and feeling more anxious than ever (I'm 24 weeks/6 months--and I finally have a bit of a bump although it's tough to tell in winter clothes).  To be honest, I have never felt more unprepared so the first part of this year will be dedicated solely to all things baby (due to some current construction on our house, I haven't purchased one thing for the baby or the nursery).  Looks like I have 2014 cut out for me--I'm excited for you all to follow me in my journey!
