The Great Pumpkin (See Jane Celebrate)

j crew field jacket
I love Halloween; it's definitely one of my favorite holidays.  Plus, it marks the eve before November, which happens to be what I consider the start to the holiday season (you know: Election Day, MY BIRTHDAY, Thanksgiving,  Hanukkah, Christmas, etc).

Also, be sure to check out my interview over on Jena's blog.  If you don't know her, she's an awesome, fellow Chicago blogger (who happened to also go to my alma mater); if you're into cool fashion and Barney's is your mecca, then her blog is a must visit.

Butternut Squash Soup ...With Apple and Sage (See Jane Make)

Squash calls my name every fall.  Even though they're a pain to cut (how do you people carve pumpkins so well?!) and some can be funny looking (look at that butternut squash...yes, I am a child), they're just so delicious that I can't resist them!  Soups are my favorite to make on Sundays because they cook all day and you can eat them all week.  I put my two favorite fall treats to good use this past weekend and the outcome was a delicious soup.

2 small butternut squash, peeled and diced
3 small apples, cored and diced
1.5 cups mirepoix (mixture of diced onions, carrots, celery)
3 T olive oil
3.5 cups vegetable broth
handful of fresh sage leaves, torn
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon cayenne (depending upon your love of spiciness)
salt and pepper to taste

Add all ingredients to crockpot and cook on high for 5 hours, until soft.  Put ingredients in blender and puree.  Serve hot with crusty bread.

Uniform Rebel (See Jane Wear)

Zara sweater (last worn here),  H&M oxford, J Brand jeans, J Crew heels, KW sunglasses
I joked with a co-worker this morning (who happened to go to high school with me) that my outfit was very reminiscent of our alma mater: cable knit, navy, with a (popped) collar underneath.  What we weren't allowed to wear were slashed up jeans.  Or shiny heels.  That's just the rebel, all-girls school graduate in me, I guess.

Cognac + Mustard (See Jane Wear)

Rag & Bone jeans, Madewell top, Kenna-T leather jacket (old but similar--and a great price!),
Zara scarf, J Crew pumps
It seems that whenever I try to be the most creative with items in my closet, I always end up giving up and putting on the ol' standbys.  On a blustery, fall day, you simple can't go wrong with stripes, a buttery, leather jacket and an oversized scarf.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Fall Upgrades (See Jane Switch Out)

Every season, I keep my eye out for a few key pieces that can refresh my past year's wardrobe.  Since trends come and go, I tend to upgrade a few key pieces that start to wear out due to constant wear.  I had to toss my beloved faux fur vest (RIP) because it was a knotty and matted mess, but I can't stop thinking about a shearling version now.  Also, a slight change in lip color can make the most tired wardrobe feel lively again; I have my eye on all things plum and mulberry for fall and winter.  I'm also excited to tuck away my dark denim in exchange for something super washed out.

Plaid is Forever (See Jane Wear)

Penfield flannel shirt, Zara coat (old), Theory leather leggings, Dolce Vita heels (old but similar),
Karen Walker sunglasses, Cuyana bag (c/o)
Plaid seems to be having a moment this fall, which leads me to the question: when did it go out?  Even so, I'm a sucker for hopping on certain bandwagon trends, especially when it's something I'd wear anyway.  I'm a little ashamed I bought this shirt when I know my mom has a perfectly good version tucked away in her "vintage" (see: old clothes she hopes will come back in style) closet back at home.  However, I'm pretty sure she used that shirt to dress up our Halloween scarecrows, too, so I'm glad I bought my own.

Spring Coat During Fall (See Jane Wear)

Zara coat (old but similar), Gap cable knit sweater (old but similar), Banana Republic chambray,
J Brand jeans, Zara boots

A peach hue doesn't always immediately correlate with fall to me, but I think the tone is totally appropriate.  This light spring coat was perfect for today's blustery weather.

Apologies for the sporadic posting lately; I plan to get on a more consistent schedule soon!

Basketweave (See Jane Wear)

J Crew coat, Old Navy chambray, Gap skirt (old but similar),
Clare Vivier clutch (c/o W Concept), KW sunglasses
Just a quick hello and post from me as I recover from the weekend.  It went by in a blur (of course) and if you follow me on instagram, you saw that I spent Sunday cheering on my sister who ran the Chicago Marathon.  I have so much respect and admiration for people who run (and many of them for run good causes--my sister teamed up with World Vision) and it's just fun to watch the city come together and cheer on each other.

How was your weekend?

Punk Ballerina (See Jane Wear)

Zara jacket (old but similar), Club Monaco skirt (old but similar), J Crew sweater,
Seychelles boots
, Ray Ban wayfarers
A tulle skirt plus leather anything makes it just a little tougher.  And if you'll veer your eyes south, towards my legs, you'll see just how tough I am; it's just a little casualty stumbling into a cobblestone ledge during a London Tower tour.  I laughed (mortified by all the bystanders who saw me), cried (a blow to both shins never feels good), dusted it off and finished the tour like a champ--limping and sniffling all the way.  I'm such a badass.

Apple Cinnamon Muffins (See Jane Bake)

It may be cliche, but once fall rolls around, I'm all about the apples.  Apple pie?  Sign me up.  Apple crumble?  Feed me.  Applesauce?  Mmm, just like my mom used to make (heated up!).  At brunch this week, I ate the most delicious apple cake at Lula Cafe.  It wasn't enough to satisfy my taste for apples; I picked up apples at the grocery and was determined to make something just as delicious and apple-y.  The verdict?  My delicious breakfast for the week.

**I used this recipe and made a couple tweaks, including: 1/2 t nutmeg, replaced half of the white sugar with brown sugar, used three whole apples, and replaced the topping with a glaze using 1/2 c confectioners sugar + 1 T milk.

Fancy {Sweat}Pants (See Jane Wear)

Joie pants, American Rag sweater, J Crew pumps, Chanel bag (similar), Rayban classic wayfarers
I wore these fancy sweatpants to brunch with flats and a cross-body bag and then out with leopard pumps and a red lip.  They're so perfectly slouchy that you can easily wear them casually and at the same time, no one will question you when you throw on heels with them.  In fact, I might wear them to bed tonight, too--no judgement, now.

R29 X Kate Spade 'Beau' Bag (See Jane in NYC)

I took a quick day trip to NYC last month to team up with Refinery29 and Kate Spade to celebrate their new 'Beau' bag.  In addition, the feature highlights some of my favorite places in the Meatpacking District (where we shot the pictures!); be sure to check it out here.
